Killarney Come Rain or Shine

Even in summer the Irish weather can be changeable and unpredictable but as the saying goes “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing,” so come prepared to experience all four seasons in one day. A good waterproof jacket and a good pair of hiking shoes will come in handy to get out and explore the magnificent scenery that Killarney and its surroundings have to offer come rain or shine. The changing weather only adds to the drama of the landscapes. The view of the lake from the hotel changes constantly depending on the weather and time of day making it a view you can never get bored of.

If, however, exploring the wild outdoors in the rain doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, why not check out our ideas for rainy day activities? There is something for everyone here regardless of the weather:

1. Seek Shelter in the Killarney National Park

Even on rainy days the national park is unmissable. Muckross Abbey is nestled in an enchanting forest and the ruins of the Franciscan abbey are a magical place to wander around on a drizzly day. Muckross House and Farms are also well worth a visit. Heat up and dry off in the open fires of the farm houses while sampling some freshly baked bread and experience what rural life was like in Ireland through the ages at Muckross farms or take a tour of Muckross House then enjoy a coffee and cake in the Muckross Visitor’s Center Café.  Then head on to Torc waterfall as the water is at its most powerful on a rainy day and, it is only a short walk from the carpark and sheltered by trees.

2. Delight in Traditional Irish Music and Dance

Ireland is famous for its pubs and trad music and the pubs in Killarney do not disappoint! If you don’t feel like venturing out in the rain why not try out some local cuisine, great locally brewed beer or distilled whiskey accompanied by some trad music at one of Killarney’s many pubs. J M Reidy’s is a must visit with a café and bakery, brunch and bites, cocktails, sweetshop pub and courtyard and music venue this one pub has it all!  Alternatively, book a ticket for Celtic Steps a fun-filled show demonstrating some of the finest Irish dance and music you’ll see and only a short distance from The Lake Hotel.

3. Seek Refuge at Ross Castle

Open from 9.30-17.45 (last admission at 17hrs) Ross Castle provides a refuge from the drizzly weather. Take a tour and learn about the castle’s fascinating history or even venture out onto the lake in one of the waterbus tours that leave 4 times a day from the pier just outside the castle. The waterbus is enclosed so even on rainy days you can get out and see the beauty of the upper lakes and the islands and surrounding mountains.

4. Slainte!

The word whiskey comes from uisce beatha old Irish for the ‘water of life’ and it is a tipple steeped in Celtic history and culture. On a rainy day why not book a distillery tour at Killarney Brewing and Distilling to learn more about the history and production of Irish whiskey, gin and beer while enjoying a few samples!

5. Cosy Up at The Lake Hotel

If you don't feel like going out at all then cosy up for the day at The Lake Hotel. Savour a leisurely breakfast with spectacular lake views, relax in our piano lounge and warm up beside the fire, indulge in luxurious afternoon tea* with picture perfect views, experience culinary excellence and exemplary service in our award-winning Castlelough Restaurant.
